Center of Excellence for Energy (COE) Workshop 1
Transitioning the Egypt Electric Grid: Renewables, Energy Storage and Hydrogen
Presented by: Dr. Ryan Milcarek
Participants will need: Laptop, software: MATLAB.
Outcomes: Certificates for students.
Two-Day Workshop Schedule |
Day 1 |
Session 1 (1.5 hours) |
- Overview of the workshop, learning outcomes, and process to receive a certificate.
- Evaluating renewable energy technology for the grid – Solar PV, wind – evaluation of current resources in Egypt .
- Interactive working session to assess solar PV, wind energy, and other renewable energy generation for Egypt using software – program to be provided that will use solar insolation and/or wind data from Egypt.
|
Session 2 (1 hour) |
- Challenges integrating renewable in the grid (converter, power electronics, PV).
|
Session 3 (1.5-2 hours) |
- Evaluating energy storage technologies.
- Discussion on energy storage technologies, technical parameters (capacity, depth of discharge, charge/discharge rate, etc.), and state-of-the-art.
- Differentiating between short term and long-term storage technologies, economics, etc.
- Interactive working session to assess Egypt’s energy storage requirements using software – program will be provided that integrates solar insolation/wind data from Egypt with the electric consumption data.
|
Day 2 |
Session 4 (2 hours) |
- Long-term energy storage – Hydrogen.
- Discussion on the technologies, products, technical parameters and state-of-the-art.
- Interactive working session to assess Egypt’s energy storage requirements using software - program will be provided to assess the impact of excess energy generation on decarbonization of key sectors using hydrogen.
|
Session 5 (2 hours) |
- Case Study of Transitioning the Arizona Electric Grid.
- Majority of the session dedicated to finishing workshop activities (required for certificate), answering participant questions and discussion.
